Eastbrookend Apple Orchard Wassail |
||
|
The King wasn't the only crown in town today, with ivy headpieces the must-have fashion at this year's Eastbrookend Apple Orchard Wassail.
Hosted at the Discovery Centre by Barking and Dagenham (LBBD) Ranger, 'Kingfisher' Carol, the age-old traditional involves a procession of songs and music to ward off evil spirits and to 'wake up' orchards as winter makes way for spring.
Raising a toast (a speech) and door-to-door carol singing are both believed to have come from wassail gatherings.
"I'd never heard of a wassail before today, but it was nice to find out about the tradition and how it's still around in various forms. It did start to get a bit 'Wicker Man' at the end, but Lee and I made it out." | ||
